¶ … search I intended to use various keyword searches in order to find the relevant literature regarding how lifestyle modification compared to no modification in liver transplant patients, with a view to the impact on quality of life over 4 months post-operation. I was utilizing an intervention PICO and the reviews that I deemed relevant were systematic, reviews with meta-analysis of randomized control trials, case control studies, qualitative studies, and articles in which expert opinion was pronounced. Thus the purpose of these searches was to find literature which represented the extent of academic work on the subject in recent years. Purpose Statement

The purpose of this review was to discover primary sources in various databases such as Medline, Cinahl, Embase, PsychINFO, and PubMed. Secondary sources were also targeted using Cochrane Database of Systematic Reviews and Cochrane Central Register of Controlled Trials.

Strengths and Weaknesses

Medline was utilized primarily because it is a well-known database, free to use, and has comprehensive summaries built into web-based browser viewing. Focused searches provide relevant match criteria and the articles may be accessed with an abstract posted for reading. The site is frequently updated and reviewed. The only weakness of the site is that it does not cover journals from around the world.

Likewise, Embase also requires a subscription, but its database is significantly larger than most and it is daily updated to ensure the latest in research information.
PsychINFO serves as a psychology literature index, with roughly 34 million articles, books and dissertations. It is made available by the American Psychology Association. Its main weakness is that it is subscriber-based and its journals include generated searches that date all the way back to the 1950s and in some cases to the 1800s.

PubMed contains nearly 20 million citations and even more journals, and provides information on nursing, biomedical, dentistry, and pharmacy. It is free and houses some of the oldest evidence-based research.

Key Word Searches

Key word searches included various phrases such as "post liver transplant patient," "post-operative liver transplant patient," "change in diet," "nutrient levels," "quality of life," and any combination of the aforementioned among other similarly worded combinations of key words. Key words were culled from various commonalities among primary reading at the beginning of this research.

(2012) study entitled "Quality of life and physical activity in liver transplantation patients: results of a case-control study in Italy." This article was helpful in pointing the way to other articles as it also contained key words that would later be used to generate further results in the search engines and databases mentioned above.
